"The first thing I liked about Earth Tunnel is its name. It sounds like a really cool Swedish 70s prog rock band. All its members have beards and they have songs about fairies and deep, inpenetrable forests. So needless to say I was intrigued. And in a way, the Earth Tunnel I’d like to talk about today is similar: Earth Tunnel is a virtual project aimed at the creation of a 3D tunnel whose ends meet at the end of a 35,500 km journey, the approximate distance of one trip around the world, 500 km underground. One pixel is equivalent to 1 cm. The tunnel is constructed thanks to images embedded in its walls.

This 3D tunnel can be used to upload your favorite pictures that would give you memories regarding the past years. You can upload how many ever photos you want. "EarthTunnel is one of these collaborative projects that come around every now and then, and that aim to create a true representation of people from all over the world on the Internet.
In this particular case, people can make a visual contribution to a tunnel that can be traversed down by anyone on his browser just by using the cursor keys. The user can move forwards and stop whenever a picture he can see laterally catches his fancy either because he knows the person, or because the picture has a funny illustration. When that happens, he can use the pertinent cursor key in order to give it a closer look."

"Mit dem Projekt Earth Tunnel baut der 24-jährige Franzose Benjamin Nguyen Duong einen virtuellen Tunnel unter der Erdoberfläche, der – wenn er denn mal fertiggestellt sein sollte – einmal um die Welt reichen soll. Die Wände des Tunnels sind mit User-Fotos plakatiert, jedes neu hinzugefügte Bild verlängert den Tunnel.
